Sustainability
Gibbs Honey is produced in Eastern Ontario by third-generation beekeepers. We are committed to protecting the integrity of our honey and the land it comes from, valuing sustainability and transparency over market convenience.
We are officially certified Ecoresponsible™ through the Good4.Global ESG program. This designation is audited by Ecocert to ensure we are integrating sustainable development into every sphere of our activity, from strategic decisions to daily operations.
Our Commitment
As a Level 1 certified business, we have established a formal framework to manage our impact. Our current Charter focuses on four key areas of improvement.
Environmental Stewardship We manage our 111-acre property with a focus on regenerative stewardship, including the introduction of native pollinator habitat to support local biodiversity. We use only honey produced by our own bees, refusing blended or imported honey, and we prioritize wooden hives over plastic to ensure the long-term health of our colonies.
Social Responsibility We believe in enhancing food literacy through our tastings and terroir-based storytelling. By promoting ethical consumption and providing a safe, inclusive environment for our staff, we aim to cultivate stronger community bonds and allow our customers to experience their environment through taste.
Economic Integrity We support local tourism and economic development through on-farm experiences. Our focus is on building business resilience through product diversification, such as our non-alcoholic Mielo apéritifs, and maintaining ethical pricing that reflects the true value of local production.
Governance and Ethics We operate with a strong position on truth in labeling and product origin. Through our Ecoresponsible Committee, we set measurable goals and submit to regular third-party audits to remain accountable to our vision and our stakeholders.
Our Path Forward
This certification marks the beginning of a process of continuous improvement. Our immediate goals include:
-
Innovation: Improving honeybee winter survival rates through innovative beekeeping and R&D.
-
Short-Chain Production: Increasing local production partnerships for our mead and Mielo product lines.
-
Waste Reduction: Increasing the number of customers and restaurants participating in our reusable container and bulk refill programs.
